PORTLAND, Ore., June 10 (Reuters) - An Oregon high school was on lockdown on Tuesday, and police were responding to a report of shots fired at the school, local law enforcement officials said.

Gunfire had been reported at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, north of Portland, a police official for the city confirmed.

The official added that 30 to 40 Troutdale officers were on the scene. Multnomah County Sheriff's deputies are also responding, police said.

CNN reported that no one was killed in the shooting but that some people were injured, although there was no word on how many people might have been hurt.

Television footage showed police officers in helmets and tactical gear, leaving armored vehicles and running near the school's perimeter with long rifles. Students were seen streaming out of the school with their hands raised.

Authorities said Tuesday a suspect in a high school shooting near Portland is dead and the situation is stabilized.

The Multnomah County sheriff's office said there were reports of shots fired about 8 a.m. at Reynolds High School in Troutdale.

Students say they were told over the intercom there was a lockdown and to quietly go to their classrooms.

Students were evacuated from the school, hands on their heads, to be reunited with their parents in a supermarket parking lot.

Freshman Daniel DeLong, 15, said while waiting after the shooting that he saw a physical education teacher at the school with a bloodied shirt.

"I'm a little shaken up," DeLong said. "I'm just worried."

He said he was texting friends to make sure they were all OK.

"It just, like, happened so fast, you know?" he said.

Freshman Morgan Rose, 15, said she was hunkered down in a locker room with another student and two teachers.

"It was scary in the moment now knowing everything's OK I'm better," she said.

SWAT teams were going through the school room by room, KGW-TV reported.

Police set up tape around the area and were not allowing people to pass through. Fire trucks were on the scene.

The shooting follows a spate of recent attacks at or near school campuses.

On June 5, a 19-year-old man was killed and two other people wounded when a gunman opened fire in a building at Seattle Pacific University.

Troutdale is a small city of about 15,000 near the Columbia River, about 16 miles east of downtown Portland.

Shooter and 1 Student at Portland, Oregon, High School Confirmed Dead: Police.

A shooter opened fire at a suburban Portland, Oregon, high school Tuesday morning, killing one student, authorities said. The gunman is also dead.

Police say the situation at Reynolds High School in Troutdale was “stabilized” an hour after initial calls came in at 8:07 a.m. local time as the school day was beginning.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office didn't immediately say if there were other victims or the extent of any injuries. It was unclear if the gunman was killed or died from self-inflicted injuries.

“This is a very tragic day, one that I had hoped would never, ever be part of my experience,” said Linda Florence, the Reynolds School District superintendent.

One student told NBC affiliate KGW he heard two gunshots and then saw the gunman, who was not wearing a mask, chasing gym teacher and high school track coach Todd Rispler down a hall. The teacher was grazed on the hip but is OK, KGW reported.

The student said he later saw the gunman patted down by police.

“I was really scared, and I wanted to get with my family,” the student said.

A number of emergency vehicles surrounded the school, and the facility was placed on lockdown. SWAT teams have been moving from room to room to take students out safely — a process that could take two hours before every child is reunited with their parents, officials said.

One student who was reunited with his mom felt relief, and said “it feels good to be back with her.” He said there was chaos in his classroom after a lockdown was announced over the intercom.

“No one knew what was going on,” he continued. “We all went to the back of the classroom.”

Troutdale Mayor Doug Dauoust said reports of gunfire were called in as the teachers and students were arriving to start the school day.

Students have final exams Tuesday and Wednesday, the last days of the school year, and some had yet to arrive to school for the morning.

Troutdale is a suburb of about 16,000 people east of Portland on the banks of the Columbia River. Reynolds High is one of the state's largest, with more than 2,600 students.
